André Rennes

A frame-by-frame review of the driver swing from the October 28 session. It was filmed from the golfer's front-left at long distance, an oblique view that is not down-the-line, with no range screen in the clip. It is the fourth driver report, built on the reference frame (grid, center lines, diagonals, cap line and shoulder/knee lines). It closes with simple next steps.

1 Executive summary

Bottom line: a very quiet head and a very long backswing. By impact the head is only ~0.5 in lower than at the start frame, which ties his best head-drop in the logbook (report #3). The head also stays steady from the top to the release. There is no range screen in this clip, so there is no total or carry to report, and this driver report has no ball data.

The two things to work on are both in the body. The hips are ~5 in off their starting spot by impact, and ~4 in of that had already happened by the top. The tempo is ~6.2:1 (1.34 s back, 0.22 s down) against the Tour 3:1, with the club appearing to hang in a loop near the top. Heads-up: these numbers match logbook report #3 from the same date almost exactly, so this may be the same clip analyzed again (see section 10). This is driver report 4 of 10.]

Strength

Head stays level

About 0.5 in lower at impact (good band is under 2 in), and it barely changes from the top to the release. This ties his best driver result.

Priority 1

Quiet the hips

Hips are ~5 in off the starting spot by impact, and most of that happens before the downswing starts. The belt buckle should stay near the center line.

Priority 2

Smooth the long backswing

1.34 s back and 0.22 s down is ~6.2:1. A smoother, shorter backswing with no hang at the top moves it toward the Tour 3:1.

2 Timing & tempo — measured from the video

41.82 frames per second, so each frame is ~0.024 s. Backswing starts at frame 73 (~1.75 s), the top is at frame 129 (3.08 s), and impact is at frame 138 (3.30 s).

PGA Tour (Tour Tempo, "24/8")~0.80 s~0.27 s3:1

Tour figure: John Novosel, Tour Tempo. One frame either way moves the downswing between ~0.20 and ~0.24 s, so the ratio sits between ~5.6:1 and ~6.7:1. The top is the least certain frame, because the club appears to stall in a loop over frames 101–123.

What it means: The backswing (1.34 s) is about 0.5 s longer than the Tour's 0.80 s, and part of it is the slow loop near the top. The downswing (0.22 s) is quicker than the Tour's 0.27 s. His earlier driver reports sat near 2:1, so the long, slow backswing is the new piece.

3 The reference frame — how this swing was measured

Reference frame
  • Grid: each square is about 5 inches (4.6 px per inch). It is scaled from his body size in the frame because no height was given and no 4 x 4 ft mat is visible, so treat distances as ±1 inch.
  • Center lines (green): the vertical line is the center of his stance and the horizontal line is at belt-buckle height at address. The ball is not visible, so there is no ball line this time.
  • Corner diagonals (green): they cross at the belt buckle at address and give a fixed perspective scaffold. At this long, oblique distance they are a rough guide, not true depth.
  • Depth rays: not drawn. No alignment sticks or mat edges are visible (he stands on grass beside a cart path, which was not used), so depth cannot be split from sideways motion.
  • Address references: the white line is the top of the cap (head height). The dashed light-blue lines mark shoulder and knee height at address. The red trail is the head path and the yellow trail is the hands' path. Waist height is the belt-buckle line.
  • Tracking: body points were tracked automatically on 260 frames (0–6.3 s), then checked by hand at each key frame. The camera stayed still: the background moved 0.0 px (median). Frame 69 is not a true address, because the club is already swinging back, so every "vs address" number is measured from a start frame already slightly in motion.

4 Swing sequence

Nine key positions, filmed from the golfer's front-left at long distance, not down-the-line. The target side is to the right of the picture, and the club goes back toward the left.

5 Position-by-position biomechanics

Photo 1 — Address Start frame

  • Not a true address: the club is already swinging back, curving to the left of the golfer, so it is used only as the reference.
  • He is small, dark and a bit blurry on grass beside a cart path. The cap line and head dot are set from this frame.

Photo 2 — Takeaway Good

  • Head level (~0.0 in down, ~0.5 in sideways) and hips nearly still (~0.4 in).
  • Hands ~4.3 in from the start spot as the club moves back.

Photo 3 — Lead arm parallel Quiet

  • Head still level (~0.1 in higher), hands ~7.1 in from the start spot.
  • Hips ~1.0 in off their spot, so the drift has barely started.

Photo 4 — Top Hips drifted

  • Shoulders turned about 85° and hips about 45°, so the X-factor is about 40° (visual estimates, ±10–15°).
  • Hips are ~4.2 in off their start spot, about 3 in more than at lead arm parallel. Head is ~0.4 in lower and ~1.1 in sideways.
  • The club appears to hang in a loop over frames 101–123 before the hands reverse at frame 129. Hands are ~16.7 in from the start spot.

Photo 5 — Arm parallel (down) Quick start down

  • Hands drop from ~16.7 in to ~9.1 in from the start spot in just 2 frames (~0.05 s).
  • Hips add only ~0.4 in (to ~4.6 in), so most of the hip move was already done at the top.

Photo 6 — Delivery Hands close

  • Hands come back to ~3.8 in from the start spot, the closest of the downswing.
  • Head ~2.0 in sideways and hips ~5.0 in, so the body drift continues slowly.

Photo 7 — Impact Head quiet, hips slid

  • Head ~0.5 in lower (good) and ~2.2 in sideways (watch). Hips ~0.8 in lower (good).
  • Hips ~5.2 in off their start spot (fix). Hands ~6.5 in from the start spot (fix), but part of that comes from a start frame already in motion.
  • Shoulders about 20° open and hips about 35° open (±10–15°). The ball is not visible, so impact comes from the tracking.

Photo 8 — Release Stable

  • Head (~0.3 in lower, ~2.2 in sideways) and hips (~5.1 in) hold almost exactly what they were at impact.
  • Hands are ~11.9 in from the start spot as the arms extend.

Photo 9 — Finish Tall finish

  • Head ~1.3 in higher than at the start and ~7.5 in sideways. Hips ~7.9 in, as the body moves through to the finish.
  • Hands finish high, ~16.6 in from the start spot. The body looks upright and balanced, with weight on the lead side.

Depth note: the camera is oblique and far away, and no sticks or mat were visible, so no depth rays could be drawn. The "toward the ball" numbers read mostly as sideways motion on this angle, but part of them may be depth. A true face-on clip at chest height, or a down-the-line clip with sticks, would settle it (see section 10).

6 One pattern, the whole bag

The link: across the four driver reports the head problem has changed. In report #1 the head sank ~5 in, and in the last two it stays at ~0.5 in. The body now moves sideways more, with hips from ~3 in (#2) to ~5 in (#3 and #4), while tempo went from ~2:1 to ~6.2:1. Elsewhere in the bag, his closest tempo to the Tour 3:1 is the 6-iron at ~2.6:1 (Oct 14), and the 3-wood was ~1.7:1 (Oct 24). The views differ between reports, so these comparisons are rough.

7 Diagnosis

  1. The head is the strength: ~0.5 in lower at impact and nearly unchanged from the top to the release. This ties his best and is a big step from the ~5 in drop in report #1.
  2. The hips drift ~5 in sideways by impact, and ~4.2 in of it is already there at the top. The drift happens in the second half of the backswing (~1.0 in at lead arm parallel), not in the downswing.
  3. The backswing is very long (1.34 s) and the club appears to hang in a loop near the top (frames 101–123). The downswing is quick (0.22 s), so the ratio is ~6.2:1 against the Tour 3:1.
  4. Good rotation numbers: shoulders ~85° and hips ~45° at the top give an X-factor of ~40°. At impact the hips are more open than the shoulders (~35° vs ~20°). These are visual estimates, ±10–15°.
  5. Hands ~6.5 in from the start spot at impact is flagged Fix, but the start frame is not a true address, so this number is likely overstated.
  6. No ball data: without a range screen, the effect of the hip drift and the long backswing on distance and direction cannot be measured.

Confidence: high on tempo timing (frame counts, ±0.024 s per frame, with the top the least certain frame); moderate on head and hip distances (grid scaled from body size, ±1 inch, and a start frame already in motion); low on rotation angles (±10–15°, blurry golfer at a distance) and on the depth vs sideways split (one oblique camera).

8 Next steps — keep it simple

Priority 1 · Quiet hips

Hip gate

Place a headcover or alignment stick just outside each hip. Make 10 smooth swings without touching either one. Cue: "turn, don't slide."

Keeps the belt buckle near the center line from the start of the backswing to the top.

Priority 2 · Smooth tempo

Count to three, swing on four

Count "back-2-3, down" with the club swinging back on the first three counts and down on the fourth. Do 10 swings, then film 3.

Shortens the 1.34 s backswing toward the Tour 3:1 without slowing the downswing.

Priority 2 · Clean start

Still address

Set up, hold still for 2 seconds, then swing. Let the club turn around at the top without a hang.

Gives a true address frame for measuring, and a smoother top.

Keep · Head level

Quiet head

Whatever he did with the head: keep it. The cap stays on its address line through impact.

A ~0.5 in drop ties his best, and it is a big improvement over report #1.

9 Limitations & next capture

Next capture: (1) a face-on clip at chest height, square to the feet line, plus a down-the-line clip with two sticks on the ground for depth rays, (2) 2 seconds of stillness at address so the start frame is a true address, (3) a photo of the range screen after each swing, with the ball in view, (4) 3–5 balls for an average, and (5) André's height, to lock the grid scale.
